   Chemistry in the News

  • Congratulations to Jin Zhang on being elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society. This is a very prestigious honor as election to Fellowship in the American Physical Society is limited to no more than one half of one percent of the membership. Election of Jin to APS Fellowship is recognition of his outstanding contributions to physics. In particular, Jin was recognized: “For important fundamental understanding of photophysical properties and charge carrier dynamics of semiconductor and metal nanomaterials based on ultrafast studies.”

Announcements

Winter enrollment update as of 9:00 am 11/20/09

You can save yourself some steps by reading this entire section before calling anyone.

Who to contact with an advising question

Advising is no longer provided in the Chemistry Department in the Physical Sciences Building.   Chemistry Advising is now located in the Undergraduate Affairs Office in Thimann 387.  Open office hours are 1-3 pm Monday through Friday and Wednesday from 10-12.  You may also reach them by phone at 831-459-4143 or via email at chemistryadvising@ucsc.edu.

Please do not call the Chemistry Department Office with advising questions.   We are not able to help you and will refer you to the Undergraduate Affairs Office.

If you get an error message while registering

If you get an error message that says you have not met the prerequisites but you know that is not true because you are either currently enrolled in the prereq class or received a passing grade in a previous quarter, then it may be because you did not select the lecture, discussion section and lab before trying to enroll.  Please try again with this in mind.  If you are still unable to enroll, call the Registrar's help line at 831-459-4412.

Please do not call the Registrar's Office if your problem is that the course is full.  They will refer you to the Chemistry Department and we will direct you to the Course Information section below.

Please do not call the Chemistry Department Office if you are having a technical problem.   We are not able to help you and will refer you to the Registrar's Office.

Course Enrollment Status

Chem 1A - There are still seats in Chem 1A-01.  Chem 1A-02 is full and no additional seats are planned at this time.

Chem 1B - Chem 1B-01 is closed and Chem 1B-02 is full.  There is one unopened section and one partial section (opened in error) for Chem 1B-01.  We may open these sections once grades are posted and we see a demonstrated need.  There will also be openings as students move to a special ACE section so keep watch for those.

Chem 1M labs - All seats have been opened.  Should they fill, you are advised to keep watching.  Seats will become available when grades for Chem 1A are posted before Winter break and non-passing students are dropped.

Chem 108A and Chem 108B - Both are full.  Keep watching for openings as students move to a special ACE section.  Seats will also become available when grades for prerequisite courses are posted before Winter break and non-passing students are dropped.

Chem 108L and Chem 108M labs - Both labs are full and no additional sections will be created.  Keep watching for openings as students move to a special ACE section.  Seats will also become available when grades for prerequisite courses are posted before Winter break and non-passing students are dropped.

Chem 112B and Chem 112M - Contact Chemistry Advising (chemistryadvising@ucsc.edu).  Enrollment in this course by non-continuing 112 students requires a GPA of 3.5 and a grade of B+ or higher in Chem 108A.  If selected, student will be given a permission code.  Chemistry Advising is keeping an "interest" list of qualified students.  Please do not contact the instructors.

Chem 163B - This course is full.  We are looking for a larger venue.  Keep watching.

Chem 164B - This course is full.  We are looking for a larger venue.  Keep watching.
