The director of the facility is Dr. Allen Oliver.  He obtained his BSc in Chemistry at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.  Subsequently he completed both a Masters level program and Doctor of Philosophy, also at Waikato University.  While undertaking his doctorate he was hired on as the staff crystallographer at the University of Auckland under the guidance of Prof. Clifton Rickard.  In January 2000 he was hired as a post-doctoral scholar with Dr. Frederick Hollander in the X-ray facility in the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.  The post-doc proceeded smoothly and the position opened as a full-time staff position, which he was hired for.

During his employ at UC Berkeley he was intimately involved in the development of the chemical crystallography beamline at the Advanced Light Source, beamline 11.3.1.  

His focus is on chemical crystallography and service crystallography.

Currently he is the Chair of the Service Special Interest Group for the American Crystallographic Association and has served as chair for the Small Molecule SIG as well as chairing sessions for the ACA annual conferences.  He serves as Secretary for the Board of Directors of the Pittsburgh Diffraction Society.
